Important information for ALL Sportive Riders..
We have recently learnt of another cycle event taking place on the same day along a section of our NBBR Sportive route. This is the annual Bath Road Club Junior Road Race which attracts some of our most talented young cyclists. Geraint Thomas and Mark Cavendish are just a couple of previous entrants that went on to compete on the world stage. They will be riding 6 laps around a 12.7 mile circuit starting in Wing at 11:00 and finishing at the top of Cublington Hill before 14:00.
There are two sections where our Sportive routes merge onto the Bath Road Race circuit -
Whitchurch to Cublington (same direction)
Dunton Road to Stewkley (opposite direction)
We expect the 60km riders will have already completed these two sections before the race event starts but there is a high probability that our 100km and 100 mile Sportive riders will come across the race group at least once. Additional traffic controls will be enforced by the Race Event officials during the times when the race peloton are passing by. It is important not to obstruct or take any actions that could interfere with the race. The race group travels at an average speed of around 27mph and is expected to cover the 3 miles from Whitchurch to Cublington in under 7 minutes. Our NBBR Sportive riders should probably allow between 5 - 10 minute headstart from Whitchurch to avoid being caught before the top of Cublington Hill. There are plenty of places to stop at the roadside if you see them approaching. Our marshalls will also be on hand to give advice in Whitchurch and Cublington.
Our main consideration is the safety of everyone involved. We initially considered changing the Sportive routes to avoid the overlap but after discussions with the Race event organiser and British Cycling we concluded that it's perfectly possible for the two events to co-exist with a few additional safety measures. In fact, we believe it will be a great experience for the NBBR Sportive riders lucky enough to witness this major cycle race together with all the motorbikes, support vehicles and possibly a few future stars. There are bound to be plenty of photo opportunities.
