NBBR Sportive Rides
We are now hosting the third North Bucks Bike Ride after having to cancel the initial event due to Covid restrictions. The format of our Sportives has remained largely unchanged with distance offerings to suit a wide range of abilities. We have fairly unique overlapping routes which gives flexibility to choose between 60km, 100 km or 100 miles depending on how you feel on the day.
Planning suitable routes through North Buckinghamshire has been quite a challenge with HS2 and EWR development affecting our region. We have worked closely with Bucks Highways agency and the HS2 / EWR project teams to navigate around planned closures and avoid some of the more damaged roads. Although many of the worst roads have already been resurfaced there are still many awaiting repair. This year we needed to re-route sections around Calvert and Buckinghamshire Railway Centre (Quainton).
Chip Timing
There is mixed opinion on the use of chip timing in a Sportive event. We have taken into account previous feedback and decided not to have chip timing this year. The majority of riders seem to prefer using their own GPS timing devices which have clear advantages and it means that more of the proceeds go to charity.
Chip timing records just the start and finish times which is not so relevant for most participants in a Sportive event. We would always encourage riders to soak up the atmosphere of the North Bucks Bike Ride Sportive by planning regular stops. Our feed stations not only provide the food and water to keep you going but they are also a great place to meet and chat with fellow cyclists. It's a social event. Most GPS cycle computers automatically pause recording when stationary so this time is not included in the average speed calculation. There are also phone apps available which do the same thing with the most popular being Strava.
Strava
Most club and regular cyclists will already have a Strava account. The basic free account allows users to upload ride stats and keep track of various activities. We have created separate Strava 'clubs' for each NBBR Sportive distance. Doing it this way should give riders access to a list of cyclists taking part in their specific event although the ranking will only be meaningful for routes uploaded on the day of the event due to limitations of the leaderboard function. We invite registered Sportive riders to join their relevant Strava 'club' -
https://www.strava.com/clubs/NBBR2024-60k
https://www.strava.com/clubs/NBBR2024-100k
https://www.strava.com/clubs/NBBR2024-100M
There is also Strava flyby function which may appeal to some. You first need to opt-in from the Strava settings if you wish to be included. It gives a neat interactive view of your effort around the course relative to other cyclists.
To confirm - There is no Chip Timing this year.
Navigation
The course is fully signposted and there will be marshals at all key junctions. There will also be clear directional arrow signs for everyone to follow along all routes. Large scale plans of the Sportive Rides will be on display at the start/finish point. Leisure riders will receive a route map with information about the free-entry attractions at the registration desk.
GPS files - Many Sportive riders have a GPS navigation device. There are also mobile phone apps available for those that don't use a GPS cycle computer. We've been told that Komoot works well as it includes voice navigation and ride tracking. We will provid direct links to Garmin Connect and gpx file download 7 days before the event. Other file formats can be generated through the Plotaroute link.
